Maldives

In this handout photograph released by the Maldivian president's office on Sept. 29, 2009, Maldivian cabinet members dive in training for an underwater cabinet meeting in Male, Maldives, Sept. 26, 2009. President Mohamed Nasheed will chair the meeting on Oct. 17 ahead of the world climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. Since taking office last year, Nasheed has emerged as an important voice on the impact of climate change amid fears that within a century, rising ocean levels could swamp this Indian Ocean archipelago. Its islands average 7 feet (2.13 meters) above sea level, making the Maldives the lowest-lying nation on Earth.
