The sixth annual list of the best places to work in Kentucky was released by the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management State Council last week and included several area businesses. The KYSHRM will announce the company rankings during an awards dinner in late April, and listed the companies in alphabetic order in the preliminary announcement.
Local firms on the “Best Places to Work” list of large companies include Edward Jones, which has five local offices according to the telephone book, Hilliard & Lyons, King’s Daughters Medical Center and Pikeville Medical Center.
In the small/medium companies category, Appalachian Wireless and Kingsbrook Lifecare Center also made the cut. Oddly, the only local company on the list which listed an Ashland location is Kingsbrook Lifecare Center, with the rest listed as operating in “multiple cities.”

Dinner plans?
You could hear the concern in Ron Elliott’s voice last week as he discussed the economy, freezing weather and people’s dining habits.
“You can’t pay the bills on breakfast and lunch,” he said, explaining the dinner crowd at Rajah’s Family Restaurant on U.S. 60 has been extremely light during the recent cold snap. Business was especially slow during 13 days with temperatures below the freezing mark, he noted.
The restaurant, which is known for its homemade meals and attention to cleanliness, features fresh potato soup on Tuesdays and Thursdays during cold weather. The last time I was there I enjoyed an order of salmon patties accompanied by brown beans and fried potatoes. Elliott said they are also one of the few places where diners will find good liver and onions, as well as entrees including the hot brown and homemade meat loaf.
With 17 employees, Elliott said he isn’t sure how the business will continue doing business without additional customer support, especially during the evening.
“Just remind them I’m out here,” Elliott asked. For more information or to place an order, call (606) 928-3382.
Now under one roof
Country Bow-Kay of Raceland has moved its location to Gina’s Flowers at 1209 Bellefonte Road across from Super Quik.
“Customers’ accounts have been moved along with Country Bow-Kay. Nothing has changed, just the location,” said owner Gina Langdon.
The shop offers full-service floral work and has a large selection of fresh and silk arrangements, throws, pictures, candles, candies and other gift items.
The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Funeral work and after-hours services are available by telephone at anytime of day or night.
For more information or to place an order, call (606) 836-0015 or 836-1910.
Yarn & More
I had a message on my phone recently about a business called Yarn & More, although I’ve had no luck returning the call. I suspect the number I have is for a fax machine. If you know anyone connected with the business, have them get in touch.
