MARK MAYNARD: Rough weekend for teams in area

It’s almost Thanksgiving and four area teams are still playing football.

That’s the good news.

But the bad news is that most of them will be having Thanksgiving dinner with their families — and not their football teams.

My predictions don’t paint a very pretty picture for tonight’s three games involving Kentucky teams or Saturday’s game in Nelsonville, Ohio, involving Ironton.

After tonight, it’s basketball season.

Of course, I’ve been wrong before.

And away we go …

Playoffs week 3

Lexington Christian 45, Raceland 13: Rams have done a great job in reaching the Class A regional championship game again. But this Raceland team, like the others before them, won’t get to the state semifinals. Rams shouldn’t feel bad about the loss though because LCA is steaming toward a state championship.

The good news for Raceland? They won’t have to face the likes of Lucas Witt, Dominque Hayden and Brandon Burdette again. For that, they should be thankful.

Highlands 49, Johnson Central 22: The Golden Eagles have had an amazing turnaround from an 0-4 start but the journey ends in Fort Thomas tonight.

Like Raceland, Johnson Central should be proud for making it this far. I’m not sure anybody expected the Golden Eagles to be playing for the Class 5A regional championship.

And like Raceland, Central is likely going to lose to the eventual state champion. Highlands has one of the best teams in its amazing history and a state title seems an almost foregone conclusion.

Hail to the champions!

Bell County 28, Lawrence County 6: Defending state champion Bell County loves to play power football. The Bobcats are able to beat the Bulldogs at their own game in the Class 4A regional championship.

Bell County has plenty of firepower, too, and that speed will be Lawrence County’s undoing. But the Bulldogs can walk off the field with pride after accomplishing the best turnaround in Kentucky history.

Lawrence County went from 0-11 to 12-1, if the Bulldogs lose tonight. Even though both of those seasons ended with a loss on Log Mountain, that’s about where the similarities end.

Bell County will have to beat a former Bulldog to get back to the finals. Look for the Bobcats to play Boyle County, led by former Lawrence County star Boone Goldsmith, in next week’s semifinals.

Coschocton 21, Ironton 14: The Fighting Tigers have had a nice playoff run, too. That’s not surprising since coach Bob Lutz has that winning formula pretty much down to an exact science.

But Ironton won’t be able to match up with Coschocton in the regional finals. Look for a battle to the end.
