The museum will display a variety of automobiles drawn largely from the nationally renowned collection of car enthusiast William Maxwell Davis. The exhibit will include the classic Rolls Royce and Bentley of the 1930s and 1940s, as well as sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s. Additional lenders include Brenda Frederick, Henry E. “C.I. Haeberle Medical Exhibit” — Step into the world of health care circa 1940s and 1950s when late night house calls were made into homes from medical facilities and payment was made with chickens and produce.

“Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation Exhibit” — Visit this exciting ongoing exhibit in the museum’s Discovery Center, which features airplanes, a wind tunnel and hands-on activities focusing on the history of flight.

“Poage’s Landing: Life on the River” — Learn about how people live and the jobs they do along the Ohio River in this ongoing exhibit. Visitors can pilot “Little Joe,” an actual towboat. Explore the streetscape of Poage’s Landing and imagine yourself to be a banker, a grocer, a chef, a doctor or an EMT!

“Country Music Heritage Hall” — Explore the memorabilia and biographies of several well-known country music artists who came from towns either on or near U.S. 23. Learn more about Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Ricky Skaggs, Hylo Brown, Billy Ray Cyrus, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley Judd. Visit the Music Quilt, the interactive sound sculpture where everyone can be a musician.

The KENTUCKY FOLK ART CENTER

“Slow Time: The Works of Charley and Noah Kinney,” will be on display until Sept. 24 at the center.

The exhibition will present more than 80 works, including paintings, drawings and wood sculptures. It will be accompanied by a 40-page, full color catalog, which includes essays by Lee Kogan, director of the Folk Art Institute, the educational arm of the American Folk Art Museum and John Harrod, one of the nation’s preeminent authorities on traditional Kentucky music. A brief DVD, which highlights the brothers’ music and offers context for the exhibition, also will be produced.

The Kentucky Folk Art Center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of Morehead State University. The Center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

MOUNTAIN ARTS CENTER

William Salyers and Sally (Jean) Huffman-Salyers were featured artists for June at the Mountain Arts Center (MAC) in Prestonsburg. The dynamic husband and wife artist duo reside in Blaine.

PARAMOUNT ARTS CENTER

Friday, 7 p.m. — Paramount Joe's Rising Star Cafe — Friday will be hosted by Gary Newman and Sonya Crites from WTCR's Homegrown. Opening will be Rusted Clay.

Bill Hawks and Dax Hill will take the stage at 8 p.m. They started playing together in 2000 and have opened for Ricky Lynn Gregg and Hayseed Dixie. They play old and new country from Hank Williams to the more modern country of Blake Shelton and Brad Paisley.

Brad Burtner, 28, has performed at coffee shops throughout the area. His influences include REM, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and Alfred Hitchcock. He has been blessed with original songs that might best be described as acoustic pop-rock or soft-rock which he plays with soulful singing, aggressive, rhythmic guitar-playing and a big smile. Friday — Angela Williams will be performing from 10 to 11 p.m. at the Riverfront Stage in Portsmouth.

Williams is an up and coming country/blues singer who started singing when she was 3 and began playing piano at 4. She can play 16 instruments and she has performed at the Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, and many fairs and festivals. She also performs with Do Roc and The Remedies on occasion.

She has her own band with Bob Burnett on lead Guitar, Fred Spencer on bass guitar, Dave Morrison on steel guitar, Mike Hall on keyboard, Christie Whisman on rhythm guitar and Brandon Gilliam on drums.

Tonight, 7 p.m. — The Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth will host "50 Miles of Heroes." Rick Ferrell and The BloomLaters will be playing some of the finest country music ever to come out of the area. The concert is free.

For several years, Ferrell has been one of Nashville's most sought after singer-songwriter-producer-pickers. Reminiscent of James Taylor or Dan Folgleberg, he has written No. 1 hits like Tim McGraw's, "Something Like That," and Martina McBride's, "Where Would You Be." Many country music stars have recorded his songs. He will be performing songs from his new album.

The second annual 50 Miles of Heroes Festival will end on July 4 with a parade at 10 a.m. The festival began after discovering that within 50 miles of Portsmouth, more than 300 famous people made their home at one time. Movie stars, musicians, sports figures, artists, doctors, business people, writers and many more, past and present, have either been born in a 50-mile radius of Portsmouth or spent a significant part of their lives in the area. This festival honors these heroes and brings many of them back home for the event.

Monday, 7 p.m. — Shane Keister, renowned pianist, will perform with his future wife and singer, Melissa Marquais, (melissamarquais.com), and a 6-piece back-up band at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth. Keister has played with Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Lionel Ritchie, Amy Grant and many more great artists.

Marquais will perform some of the songs from her famous songwriter/ grandfather, Ernest Schweikert’s, and his amazing lyricist, Frank Reardon's, catalog of songs, among other great standards.

Marquais won the Apollo in New York City five times, performed a half time show for the New Jersey Nets and performed on Queen Latifah's nationally syndicated broadcast.
