While the confirmed cases of swine flu have yet to reach epidemic proportions in Kentucky (and we hope it doesn’t), the disease has led to the cancellation of at least one high school football game in the state.
Bishop Brossart, a small parochial school in Alexandria, cancelled its scheduled game at Elizabethtown Friday after one of its players was diagnosed with swine flu. Brossart principal Richard Stewart says other players on the team have similar symptoms.
The decision was the right one. Football is a full-contact sport, and if only one player is a carrier of a highly contagious disease, sunch close contact easily could spread the illness to players on both teams. Brossart players also would have been confined in the close quarters of a bus during the long road trip to and from northern Kentucky and Elizabethtown
It is wise to err on the side of caution.
