High school senior wins seat on board of education in Ohio

Invariably, every election produces some results that are, to say the least, a bit surprising. Here is one from Tuesday’s vote in neighboring Ohio:

Kathryn Knowles, an 18-year old senior at Jackson High School in Massilon, won a four-year term Tuesday on the Jackson Local School District board of education. Not only did Tuesday mark the first time Knowles had sought public office, it also marked the first time she was eligible to vote.

Knowles’ election is not being challenged. She met the minimal requirements to serve on the school board and received enough votes to win one of three board seats up for grabs Tuesday.

Knowles called her election in a city best known for perennial football powerhouse Massilon High School “phenomenal.” It also means that, once she begins her term on the board in January, she will have a degree of authority over the district’s superintendent, her school principal and all her teachers. But she says her only interest is in helping her school and the school district.

Based on the results of her first run for office, Kathryn Knowles’ future in politics is indeed a bright one.
