A safer A-A — 12/12/09

Traffic light near Tollesboro will aid all who use highway

While located a number of miles from this community, a new traffic light on the A-A Highway at Ky. 57 near Tollesboro in Lewis County will increase safety for all who travel both the A-A and Ky. 57.

Since the A-A first opened, many of the worst accidents have been caused by motorists pulling into the path of oncoming vehicles from side roads. The intersection of Ky. 57 and the A-A already has been the site of several such accidents. The traffic signal should eliminate them.

The traffic signal also could increase safety along the A-A by forcing motorists to slow down. . Even though most of the A-A is two lane, it is easy to come down with a case of “leadfoot” when traveling the A-A by going excess of 70 mph. The traffic light will force drivers on the A-A to slow down by making them come to a stop.

A-A motorists will have no excuse for failing to stop for the new traffic signal. The new signal includes double-red beacons and reflective yellow backplates for better visibility. New advance warning flashers east and west of the intersection will alert motorists that the signal is about to change.

The Kentucky Transportaation Cabinet tried other steps to increase safety at the intersection but was not satisfied with the results. The traffic signal will succeed where other improvements have failed.
