In Your View — 10/04/09

Thankful she can voice her opinion

This is in response to the Sept. 30 “In Your View” letter from R.S. Bradley supporting keeping Glenn Beck of Fox News on the air.

I agree 100 percent with this view. People who think it is wrong to speak up and speak out should live in. let’s say, Cuba for a year. Maybe then they would truly appriciate the freedoms we still have in this country.

By the way, if you don’t like what you see on TV, do you know about the “off” button? Well, use it. I, for one, am thankful I still can voice my opinion.

Cannon right about Edwards

I agree with John Cannon’s Sept. 30 column about Douglas Edwards. He gave us all the news we needed to know at that time.

Now everyone wants to get in the act. When a story first comes out, most of them will ride it until it fizzles out.

I like professional football But I am getting tired of all these announcers and commentators. How many are there?

On Direct TV, football is 24 hours a day. On channel 11 and channel 13 on Sundays, there are five men on each channel talking about football. They all said this player, who the Redskins signed for $100 million, would help their team. The team has not been helped at all.

They keep talking aout Brett Farve. OK, he is good, but enough is enough!

I don’t like to see one-sided football games, even if my team is winning. The Super Bowl is just another fooball game and sometimes is dull. I just enjoy seeng a good game of football.

Ex-Kmart workers planning reunion

Can you believe how long it's been since the Ashland Kmart stores have closed? For those of us who worked there, it seems like an eternity but also like only yesterday.

We will be hosting a reunion of the Kmart family at our home, 917 Bellefonte Road, Flatwoods, on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 5 p.m. with a pot luck dinner around 6 p.m.

It’s been too many years since we've seen each other, found out how things have been going, and just had a chance to say hi and catch up. With the loss of some of the family, and now with the South Point store closing, let's not let another year go by without getting together. We shared some special times, and made some great friends.

So, mark your calendars, tell some who may not see this, and let's have a wonderful time again, as we always did. Call (606) 836-5395 or e-mail us at kmartcouple@windstream.net. Hope to see you all there.

A few ways to pay for health care plan

So, how would we pay for a single-payer national health care plan? Easy. For starters, roll back the enormous tax cuts given to the wealthiest of Americans during the Reagan and Bush administrations and increase the tax on unearned income from the present 15 percent to 25 pecent.

How about rescinding the provision in the Medicare Modernization & Improvement Act that prohibits Medicare from negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies? That provision alone incurs countless billions of dollars in additional costs to Medicare.

And why not plug up tax loopholes that allow American corporations to avoid paying U.S. taxes through outsourcing?

The resulting increase in revenue would leave enough money left over to investigate and prosecute all of the criminals responsible for the banking and mortgage meltdown.
