Local bluegrass musician honored by hometown

ASHLAND — Bluegrass artist Melvin Goins was honored recently in his hometown of Bramwell, W.Va., where Congress Nick Joe Rahall appeared to help the town celebreate Melvin Goins Day.

Rahall presented legislation making May 1 a day to honor the West-Virginia born music star who has appeared on the cover of Smithsonian magazine, who was named Appalachian Treasure by Morehead State University in 2000, and has been inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.

“It’s a big honor to be remembered by them,” Goins said of the resolution to set aside a day to honor him.

On May 2, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new sign at the Nick J. Rahall Coal Heritage Interpretive Center, followed by a concert by Goins.

In addition, Goins appeared in the upcoming film “Who Shot Lester Monroe?,” a film made by Olive Hill native and country music artist Tom T. Hall. In it, Goins sings and tells a story about the title character.

This weekend, Goins will appear at the Lost Creek Music Festival at Joe’s Lost Creek Jamboree in Lowmansville. The event also features Ernie Thacker, CJ the DJ, True Gospel Echoes and other performers. Cost is $15 for the weekend.
