Ashland woman wins national talent show

ASHLAND — A local woman’s career in country music is moving ahead with her wins in a national contest.

Cheryl White of Ashland won the National Talent Quest in Las Vegas, which is sponsored by Priddis Music Company.

White, 25, who has competed for four years, won the women’s country category this year and in 2010; rules prohibit her from competing in the same category two years in a row, so she competed in the pop category last year and placed sixth. She is the first two-time country winner of the competition which was Sept. 16 through 23.

Among the prizes are the opportunity to make a demo record with the Priddis company and to record karaoke tracks with Priddiss.

The process began in Lexington, where she won the semi-finals. About 400 competed in Las Vegas. White said this year, competitor came from Canada and Jamaica.

After attending for four years, she said she has made many friends.

“It’s honestly like church camp for karaoke singers,” she said. “I meet people there who go every year and you keep in contact with those people. Most of my Facebook friends are people I met there.”

White moved to Ashland with her husband, Josh, who is an Ashland native, a few months ago, when she was pregnant with her first child. Although being a new mother adds a challenge to her pursuit of music, she said she continues to build her music career, traveling to shows with baby in tow, when possible.

She has performed at Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge and she sings with a band, Superfecta¸which is based in Lexington and performs R and B, Motown and funk tunes.

“We have a pretty big following and most people know these songs,” White said. “The music we do is fun, but I prefer country.”
