30th annual railroad festival this weekend at Greenbo

ASHLAND — This year is the 30th for the annual Tri-State Model Railroad Show and Railroad Collectors Sale and Swap.

But show chairman Dale Smith said nothing special is planned for the event.

“Frankly, there’s no room to do any more than we do,” Smith said. “We have 4,000 visitors in two days. If we last another 20 years, we’ll do something special.”

The show, set for March 16 and 17 at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, will include a variety of exhibitors and at least 60 vendors vendors. Displays will include N, O. HO, and G gauge layouts from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky and the outdoor 7 1/2 gauge operating live steam train owned and operated by Joe Holbrook and Don Saager of Lexington. Rides will be available.

Smith said the event has attracted as many as 6,500 visitors, depending on weather and sports events on the day. Those who planned the event decided to choose a time — the third weekend in March — to schedule it and were able to avoid it falling on Easter.

He said the first year that attendance was big, it hit 2,500.

“Everything came together — the weather, the advertising and editorial material, and we had so many people, the people in the kitchen cooked and served everything they had for Saturday and went into the freezer and pulled out things they had and that’s how they kept their steam tables full,” he said.

Not only is the show a time for appreciating and learning about railroad history, it’s about visiting with friends with  a common interest.

“it’s old home week once a year  for a lot of the people and the vendors,” Smith said of the free show. “Everybody there is knowledgeable about what they’re doing and you can talk to vendors and exhibitors and learn something. It’s a grand match of people and business.”

The 30th annual Tri-State Model Railroad Show and Railroad Collectors Sale and Swap will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17 at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park. For more information, call (304) 523-0364 or (740) 532-6102.
