Paternity is at issue in Bobby Cyrus’ new song “Milkman’s Eyes.”
The song appears on his new CD “Homeplace,” which will be available for download in December.
The up-and-coming country singer splits his time between Louisa, where he worked selling coal mining machines for years, and Nashville, where he’s pursuing a career in country music.
His last name gives rise to the question, “Any relation?” and the answer is yes, he is the cousin of Billy Ray Cyrus.
Their relationship is a warm one and the younger Cyrus appreciates the help he’s received from Billy Ray, who co-wrote “Milkman’s Eyes” with him. He also performs on the song and in the video, which can be seen on GAC and YouTube.
“Billy Ray worked really hard to record and do the video with me,” Cyrus said. “He put in a whole lot of effort to do a good job and support me. He’s been selfless when it comes to helping me .... and he’s right in the middle of doing this show on Broadway (“Chicago”) and took time to Tweet about the video. That was just phenomenal.”
The song, Cyrus said, is a fun one.
“It’s cute. It’s a really cool track and I had some really great musicians,” Cyrus said, adding
Randy Kohrs, who performed with Hank Williams III and Tom T. Hall, played steel guitar and Carl Jackson, a songwriter who worked with Glen Campbell, played banjo. Tom T. Hall also wrote a song with him and performed on the recording as well as Salyersville native Rebecca Lynn Howard, known for his “Forgive.”
“The whole record is stacked with phenomenal musicians,” he said, noting the recording was made at the studio of Ricky Skaggs, another Louisa native, in Hendersonville, Tenn. “There are a lot of life stories on that record.”
The title track, “Homeplace,” was inspired by a poem Cyrus’ father wrote. “I had a recording of him reciting it and (the song) has got him reciting it on the last part.”
“Homeplace” will be available through BGC Records.
