With little concern for getting ink on their hands, students of Faith Christian Academy dived into an art project at the Kyova branch of the Boyd County Public Library.
Markers, stamp pads and stickers were at their disposal for their project that would benefit others and be a load of fun in the process.
In its ninth year, the Hands that Touch a Heart project gives children the opportunity to make cards, using a template provided by the library, some of which will be send to U.S. soldiers serving overseas; the remainder of the cards will go to residents of local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. More than 2,500 cards were made and given out last year.
Children from Faith Christian Academy enjoyed making the cards.
“It was fun,” Mary Young, an 8-year-old third-grader, said. “It would be fun if we wrote them a poem.”
Chance Horn, 11, of Bolts Fork, the fourth-grade son of Angel and Michael Horn, said he believes recipients will be delighted to receive the cards. “I think they’ll be surprised,” he said. “They’ll think it’s pretty.”
Mary Young’s brother, David, who is 9, said he thinks it’s “cool” to think a soldier overseas might get his card.
Fourth-grade teacher Shannon Campbell said classes from the school have participated in Hands that Touch a Heart before.
“We thought it would be a good incentive for students to be a helping hand to others,” Campbell said. “It’s a chance for them to show their love for other who might not have any family and might be having a difficult time.”
Even more importantly, the students understood the value of what they were doing to help someone else.
“I thought it was a really good idea,” seventh-grader Elizabeth Dean, 12, daughter of Daron and Lisa Dean of Catlettsburg, said.
Her friend Holly Eastwood agreed.
“If I were a senior citizen, I’d be really happy if someone make me one of these,” the 12-year-old daughter of Ryan and Brigette Eastwood of Ashland, also a seventh-grader, said.
