ASHLAND —
The third annual Back to School Bash, scheduled for Saturday at Ashland City Pool at Dawson Park, is expected to be a real blowout.
Sean Murray, director of parks and recreation, said he expects a good turnout, if the weather cooperates.
“The weather’s been fantastic each year,” he said. “We get hundreds each year; last year, we had about 300.”
He said school children of all ages, as well as adults, attend the party, which was pool manager Aretha Murray’s idea.
“The pool slows down when it’s time to go back to school with kids shopping for new clothes and school supplies,” he said. “Aretha said, ‘Let’s get everybody together one more time.’”
The party also is a productive event for River Cities Harvest, which received an extra 400 cans of food last year as a result of the bash.
“We’re really excited about it,” Murray said. “It’s a great event.”
The pool will open at noon and events connected with the bash, which will benefit River Cities Harvest, are set to begin at 1 p.m.
Those events will include diving contests, hula hoops, basketball and cornhole, as well as the opportunity to win door prizes, including school supplies and a 2013 season pass to the pool. Events are scheduled through 5 p.m.; the pool will close at 7 p.m., Murray said.
Admission is free with a donation of non-perishable food for River Cities Harvest, which will distribute all donations to agencies feeding local people in need.
