Ashland the new hub of Tri-State Army recruiting

ASHLAND — The U.S. Army Recruiting Office on Greenup Avenue in Ashland will now serve the Tri-State region.

The Ironton office was consolidated with the Ashland office earlier this month as part of the Army’s nationwide reorganization of its recruiting efforts.

“We’re consolidating as part of what we call pinnacle recruiting,” said Donald Herth, chief of advertising and public affairs for the Army’s Columbus office of the 3rd Recuriting Brigade based in Fort Knox. “We’re creating larger recruiting centers to make better use of our resources.”

Herth said the move is not spurred by budgetary issues but instead by a desire to make recruiting more reflective of the Army itself.

“It’s called small unit recruiting,” he said. “It’s more like how the Army operates. Small units, or teams, work together to accomplish a mission. Recruiting used to be every individual for himself. You worked in an office with other recruiters but you did everything by yourself.”

Nationwide, Herth said recuiting quotas have dipped as the U.S. continues winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Herth said Congress has taken away some of the Army’s advertising money because it is reaching its nationwide recruiting goals. He did attribute this in part to a weak job market, which has hit young adults particularly hard.

The Ashland office has traditionally been busier than the Ironton office. The Ironton office averaged 12 recruits per year.

Herth said the closure of the Ironton office after more than two decades will not affect the Army’s presence in the city and in other surrounding southern Ohio communities.

“Although we are consolidating offices to better utilize our soliders, I don't think that Ironton will see any difference as far as having our soldiers there and taking care of the young people in that community as well,” he said, noting the Army will continue all of its recruting activities at local high schools and colleges in the area.

The battallion has also closed its office in Logan, W.Va. The battalion covers recruiting in Southern Ohio, western West Virginia and northern Kentucky.
