2 killed in Elliott County accident

BRUIN - A man and a woman were killed Wednesday in a one-vehicle accident in Elliott County.

Kentucky State Police at Morehead identified the victims as Lisa A. Crockett, 36, of Olive Hill, and E.H. Evans, 74, of Sandy Hook.

The wreck occurred about 2:40 p.m. on Ky. 7 in front of Bruin Body Shop. The vehicle was southbound when the driver apparently lost control, causing it to spin into an embankment, according to the KSP. The vehicle overturned several times, ejecting both occupants.

According to the KSP it had not been determined whether Crockett or Evans was driving.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the accident scene by Elliott County Coroner Mark Lewis.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Mike McPherson.

Culvert repairs on Ky. 8 in Lewis

VANCEBURG - Part of Ky. 8 in Lewis County will be closed to through traffic Wednesday, just west of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Parkway (Ky. 3020) at Black Oak.

The closure, during daytime work hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will safeguard motorists and workers as Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 crews replace a drainage pipe underneath the roadway.

Bear permits on sale now

CATLETTSBURG - Bear permits are on sale for the 2009 season that will take place on the third weekend of December in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties.

There is a 10 bear or female bear quota, whichever is reached first.

The season is open to Kentucky residents only. All bears harvested must be taken to a department operated check station and telechecked.

All bear hunters will be required to call an automated telephone number at 9 p.m. the first day of the hunt to learn whether the quota has been reached. If the quota is met on day one, then the season will be closed. Baiting for bears and the use of hounds will be prohibited.

SOAR meeting set for Thursday

ASHLAND - The Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees will meet at the Steelworkers Union Hall, 734 Carter Ave., on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

The speaker will be John Waltz, a veteran and candidate for the United States Representative from the Fourth District. Pizza will be served to members and guests.

SOUTH SHORE - The Alben W. Barkley Democrat Club will meet Thursday at the McKell Branch of the Greenup County Public Library. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Parade, fireworks in Sandy Hook

SANDY HOOK - A Family July Fourth Celebration will take place Saturday complete with a parade down main street at 2:30 p.m.

Following the parade, an all day celebration will take place at the Elliott County Park, culminating with a fireworks show at 10 p.m.

The sponsor for the event will be the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue and the Firefighters Assistant Service Team.

Screenings for glaucoma at mall

RUSSELL - Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Healthy Community Services program will offer free glaucoma screenings from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ashland Town Center.

In addition to the glaucoma screenings, representatives of the OLBH Women’s Center will provide information about women’s health, the center’s services and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
