The Office of Emergency Management for Ashland, Boyd County and Catlettsburg has issued tips for safety during the July 4 festivities.
Safety tips for using fireworks include:
‰Children should not be allowed to light their own fireworks and should be supervised when around fireworks.
‰Fireworks should be lit outside with an adult present.
‰All package directions should be followed.
‰Light fireworks one at a time at a safe distance from others and have a bucket of water and hose nearby.
‰Don’t attempt to fix or relight fireworks.
‰Fireworks should not be carried in a pocket.
‰Only state fire marshal-approved fireworks should be used.
Safety tips for grilling include:
‰Inspect a gas tank before use and don’t attempt to repair damage yourself.
‰When buying or refilling a gas tank, secure it in an upright position and in a well ventilated area of the vehicle. Take it directly to the place it will be used.
‰Always check for leaks. To check for a leak in a gas tank use soapy water around the tank and valves. Bubbles will form to indicate leaks.
‰Refer to the grill manufacturer’s instructions before lighting a grill.
‰Store gas tanks in an upright position and don’t store in an enclosed area such as a garage.
‰Don’t store an extra gas tank under a grill.
