2 reportedly killed in plane crash

BUFFALO CREEK, W.Va. — Two people were reportedly killed on Sunday when a single-engine plane crashed around 1 p.m.

A witness at the scene, Garrett Mayo, told The Herald-Dispatch he saw two bodies after taking his four-wheeler to the site of the wreckage.

Authorities are on the scene including the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Kenova, Ceredo and Lavalette police and fire departments, West Virginia State Police and emergency crews from Boyd County.

Emergency crews are using the parking lot of Buffalo Valley Missionary Baptist Church as a staging area. The only access to the site is by all-terrain vehicle.

The plane apparently took off from Tri-State Airport and crashed about five miles away.

Kevin Price with Tri-State Airport, said that crews are currently in recovery efforts, but would not confirm how many people were on board during a brief news conference about 3:15 p.m.

Price said the plane was taking off from Tri-State Airport and was in a typical takeoff and landing pattern when it crashed five miles from the airport.
