ASHLAND —
At a meeting of the Ashland Board of City Commissioners Thursday the commissioners approved the probationary appointment of a new Fire Marshal. Michael Baer, who has been working for the Ashland Fire Department for about years, will begin his job, a new position in the fire department, on Monday.
Ashland Fire Chief Scott Penick said Baer has previously conducted inspections for the fire department and he is confident with the idea of Baer filling the position.
“He brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the position and carries all of the certifications,” Penick said. “He’ll get the inspection department back on track.”
Baer said he has been conducting fire inspections for the department for 3 or 4 years, so he is familiar with the process and the department. His new job will include tasks such as overseeing fire alarm plans and construction plans for new businesses in the area and responding to phone calls and complaints from citizens. Overall, he will be in charge of the fire department’s fire prevention program, he said.
“I’m excited. I think (the new position) will benefit everyone involved in the process,” Baer said. “I’m excited to get started.
Having a fire marshal means someone will almost always be in the office and available to answer questions the public might have regarding fire safety, Penick said. It also means businesses should be expecting letters regarding fire inspections.
“I don’t want to sound cheesy, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” Penick said.
Having a fire marshal, and soon two fire inspectors, will create a safer city and a safer environment for firefighters and citizens alike.
Applications for the two civilian fire inspector positions are being accepted now, Penick said.
“We want to move quickly to get the department up and running. ... Mike has a huge task ahead of him. The department has been completely revamped,” Penick said.
