ASHLAND —
Poage Landing Days will return to Ashland on Friday. This year’s festival will feature a carnival atmosphere in addition to the traditional lineup of music, food and free family fun over three days.
Organizers are expecting record crowds as the event continues to grow and attract a wide range of vendors as well as a roster of talented musicians, including this year’s headlining country music star Aaron Tippin and bluegrass sensations the Grascals.
PLD President Phillip Stewart said in addition to a carnival on Winchester Avenue, there will be three stages on downtown streets as well food vendors and a big craft tent.
“We haven’t had a carnival in downtown Ashland for a long time. I think that is really neat,” Stewart said. “It will have a big ferris wheel downtown on Winchester and a carousel. To me there is nothing like driving by downtown and seeing a big ferris wheel and carnival rides on your main streets. It gives the aura of a true festival going on.”
Another new activity this year is laser tag, Stewart said. Free inflatables and other children’s activities will also be available throughout the weekend.
From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, the Ashland Area YMCA will present FIT FEST featuring demonstrations of activities ranging from dance teams to martial arts.
Skateboarders will take to the streets for the seventh-annual Southern Fried Conefest. The sanctioned event draws riders from across the country who will compete Saturday along 17th Street and Sunday on Ramey Street near Ashland Community and Technical College. Stewart said participants say the festival is one of their favorite places to compete because of the crowds.
Stewart said there is once again good participation from crafters and food vendors.
“It fills up so fast,” he said. I’m almost completely full from year to year.”
The 17th annual Ed Haley Fiddle Festival on Saturday will include contests and other performances. Fans will also have the opportunity to visit with members of the Haley family and view an exhibit of related memorabilia at 1628 Winchester Ave.
Concerts will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Friday and continue through Sunday evening with a slate of local, regional and national acts. Tippin will perform Saturday night and the Grascals will play Sunday afternoon, preceded by finalists of the Country Music Highway Road to Fame Contest and Open Rail.
“There is just so much going on in those three days that it makes it easy for the family to come out and have fun without spending a lot of money,” Stewart said.
