Two plead in Ohio dog killings

IRONTON — Two Ohio men on Thursday received the maximum sentences after pleading guilty to stabbing and slitting the throats of two dogs.

Jonathan Jiles and Brian Sharp, both 20 and both of Pedro, entered the pleas in Ironton Municipal Court. Each man was charged with prohibition concerning companion animals and criminal trespassing.

Judge O. Clark Collins Jr. sentenced each man to six months in jail on the former charge and one month on the latter for total terms of seven months each. The charges were both misdemeanors under Ohio law.

Collins also ordered each defendant to pay a $1,200 fine, serve three years on probation and be prohibited from owning companion animals.

Jiles and Sharp also will each have to pay $800 restitution to the owners of the slain dogs, Josie and Michael Scythes of Pedro.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless, the couple arrived home last month to find their two chained dogs slain in the front yard.

Following their arrests, Jiles and Sharp confessed to the crime and said they were drunk at the time, Lawless said. Both men also said they did not target the Scytheses.
