Homer and Mary Short to be honored today

PAINTSVILLE — A dedication ceremony in honor of Homer and Mary Short is scheduled for 10 a.m. today on the property between First Commonwealth Bank and Hardee’s, North Mayo Trail, at Mayo Plaza.

The Shorts were singled out for this honor in a resolution in the General Assembly in March, which included naming of a section of Ky. 321, because of their faithful and continuous investment in Paintsville and Johnson County from their marriage on Oct. 5, 1949, until Homer’s death in 2009.

In their early years, they concentrated on the coal industry. Homer Short was a self-made coal operator. He and Mary shared a business partnership while establishing a family. They were the parents of six children: Linda Brady, Gary Short, Paula Wright, Jodi Preston, Alicia McKenzie and Matt Short. Their direct descendants now number 30.

Following the couple’s sale of their mineral holdings to Ashland Coal in 1974, the Shorts started construction of the Mayo Plaza commercial development. Today, Mayo Plaza is a retail development of more than 55 businesses which provide hundreds of jobs.

In addition to mining and retail development, the Shorts were farmers, with commercial chicken operations in Johnson and Lawrence counties and, later, cattle, horse and row crop farms in Carlisle and Paris, Ky.

Homer Short served on the boards of Highlands Regional Medical Center (21 years), Consolidated Health Systems (20 years), Citizens National Bank in Paintsville, and Peoples Security Bank in Louisa. In 1993 the couple purchased Family Bank, FSB with its seven branches in Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Pike counties. Homer served as chairman and president until his death in 2009.

The Shorts were both faithful members of the Church of Christ.

Family members will participate in Monday’s event, along with State Rep. Hubert Collins, Paintsville Mayor Bob Porter, Senator Ray Jones, officials from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Lillian Wheeler, representing the Johnson County Fiscal Court.

All of Homer and Mary Shorts former colleagues, employees, neighbors, church family and friends are invited and encouraged to attend. A reception will follow at the U.S. 23 Country Music Highway Museum.
