RUSSELL —
The hunt will be on Saturday when downtown businesses in Russell host their first ever scavenger hunt.
Participants will go into downtown businesses in search of a word that will be hidden somewhere inside each shop, said Lisa Fletcher, a scavenger hunt organizer and owner of This Old Couch Consignment Furniture. They will collect a card from each business and write the word they find in the shop on the back of the card. The words will be used to form a sentence. Names of participants who form the sentence will then be put into the prize drawing. Members of the Downtown Russell Business Association, which includes 14 businesses, will be participating.
Cash prizes are $250, $100, $75, $50 and $25. More than one $25 prize will be awarded, and there will be about 7 winners in total, Fletcher said. Some of the businesses participating will be giving away additional prizes, she said.
The main goal of the scavenger hunt, she said, is to bring awareness of the businesses in the downtown area.
“I think downtown Russell is the best-kept secret in the Tri-State. ... I’ve been here seven years, and in the last three years I’ve seen lots of growth. There are specialty shops here lots of people don’t know about,” Fletcher said.
She said new businesses in the area includes a new restaurant, Rockin’ Robin’s, and a new senior citizens center is currently under construction.
Planning for the scavenger hunt began several months ago, and if it is successful, it might become a yearly event, Fletcher said.
Registration for the hunt will be from noon to 2 p.m Saturday at the Russell train depot on Ferry Street, which will be decorated with balloons for the special occasion. During registration participants will also need to pick up a list of rules for the game. Groups as well as individuals are welcome to participate.
