WURTLAND —
A worker at DuPont Chemical’s Wurtland plant was flown to a hospital today after being burned by sulfuric acid.
The incident occurred about 12:25 p.m. at the plant. According to a Greenup County 911 dispatcher, there was no chemical release. Rather, the worker suffered acid “splash burns” to his head, face, neck and chest, he said.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the accident occurred. The Wurtland plant manufactures sulfuric acid.
The worker — whose name was not immediately available — was flown by helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital, the dispatcher said. There was no word on his condition.
In addition to Greenup County Emergency Medical Services, the Greenup and Wurtland fire departments and county emergency management agency responded to the incident, the dispatcher said.
The incident was the second industrial accident this week in the area. on Tuesday night, four workers at the Kentucky Electric Steel minimill at Coalton were injured when they came into contact with molten steel. One of the workers suffered third-degree burns. The state Labor Cabinet is investigating that incident.
