Out with the OLD

Demolition began Tuesday on the three former JC Penney buildings along the 1700 block of Winchester Avenue. It is the first physical sign of progress on a long-awaited downtown housing project.

During the next few weeks, workers will demolish all the buildings and fill in the basements, said Perry Madden, property owner and the project’s developer. He said construction should begin shortly after that on the planned 40-unit apartment building.

Madden added that an agreement with the contractor, whom he declined to name, is still being finalized but should be completed within the next few days.

The Maddens own all the buildings that span the block along Winchester, including the Henry Clay House and the Sears building.
