The speed limit on rural sections of Interstate 64, including from Bath to Boyd counties, is 70 mph now that Kentucky Transportation Cabinet traffic and maintenance crews have changed signs along the four-lane highway.
In March, Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed Senate Bill 83 which allowed for a speed limit increase on rural interstates and parkways throughout the commonwealth.
The legislation, which required that an engineering safety study be first completed, provided the Transportation secretary with the authority to increase speed limits on select sections of interstates and parkways that were deemed warranted and safe.
“After thoroughly reviewing the engineering safety studies, we have made the decision to increase the speed limit to 70 mph on these specified rural interstates and parkways,” said Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert.
“We believe this bill will facilitate the mobility of people and products, which is another plus for Kentucky’s economy.”

59-year-old accused of stealing at Raceland graduation
A 59-year-old Greenup County man is accused of stealing from students during Raceland-Worthington High School’s graduation on Tuesday night.
During the graduation ceremony, Doran O’Neal of Raceland stole about $40 and an iPhone from purses placed in a side room, according to the Raceland Police Department. Officers said the theft was captured on surveillance video and they were able to identify O’Neal.
Raceland Police Chief Don Sammons said the graduation was finished around 9 p.m. and O’Neal was in custody before 10 p.m. -

Cadets honor veterans by placing flags
On their final full day of school for the year, nearly 40 Russell High School students decided they could best spend their time placing American flags upon the graves of local veterans buried at Rose Hill Cemetery.
