‘Toilet paper’ bride ties knot in a times square restroom

Former Ashland resident winner of Charmin contest

The daughter of Independent Editorial Page Editor John Cannon tied the knot Wednesday wearing a dress made of white two-ply extra soft toilet paper.

Jennifer Cannon and Doy Nichols, who live in Lexington, were hitched Wednesday in a public restroom in Manhattan. Cannon wore a gown fashioned from glue, tape and Charmin Ultra Soft and Ultra Strong toilet tissue sheets.

The intricately detailed dress was designed by Hanah Kim, winner of the 2007 Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest, sponsored by Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com.

“You may kiss the bride,” the officiant said during the ceremony, “but please don’t squeeze the Charmin dress.”

The wedding ceremony took place in Times Square at the Charmin Restrooms, the city’s free luxury public restroom facility, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The dress, lined with taffeta and with ruffles down the back, was beautiful, said the bride’s mother, Linda Cannon, an Ashland educator.

Being paper, it tore easy, John Cannon said. “They were taping it up right to the last minute.”

The bride won the wedding in an essay contest; Charmin paid her expenses and those of the groom.

The ceremony was small, Jennifer Cannon said — the wedding couple, John and Linda Cannon, and Aryssa, the bride’s 12-year-old daughter.

And a pack of photographers. The event was broadcast nationwide on the FOX News network and a quick Google search turns up numerous pictures.

“It was so much fun,” Linda Cannon said. “It was something they’ll never forget.”

The bride and groom are planning a recommitment ceremony in March so their friends can take part, John Cannon said.
