Ramey in ruins

ASHLAND — Demolition of all of the buildings on the former Gertrude Ramey Children’s Home property began last week.

According to Boyd County Abatement Officer Steve Sturgill, the home itself was in very poor condition and presented a safety hazard.

Eight smaller buildings on the Ramey property, along with the old Boyd County Police building on adjoining land owned by the county, are also slated to be demolished in the coming weeks.

Red Oak Excavating of Westwood was awarded the project by the Boyd Fiscal Court Tuesday for the bid of $25,000.

Gertrude Ramey opened an orphanage in her home on Bob McCullough Drive in 1944 and took in children there until her death in 1991. The Boyd County Fiscal Court took title of the property, which sits on 21 acres, in 2003. Sturgill said there are no immediate plans for the property.
