GRAYSON — Former President Bill Clinton will be back in the area Monday, stumping for his wife.
President Clinton is scheduled to be at East Carter High School at 9:15 a.m. on the eve of the Kentucky primary. U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton is seeking to become the Democratic presidential candidate.
Clinton trails frontrunner Barack Obama in the polls and in delegates although she is expected to carry Kentucky easily. Hillary swept past Obama in the West Virginia primary last week. She also carried Kentucky border states Tennessee, Ohio and Indiana.
Democratic voters in the Bluegrass State, along with those in Oregon, will cast their ballots Tuesday. Polls in Kentucky open at 6 a.m.
Hillary Clinton said in a speech to Kentucky Democrats earlier this month that Kentucky voted for her husband in 1992 and 1996, putting her in the best position to win the state in the fall. It’s a case she’s been making about the “swing states” nationwide, saying she has the best chance to defeat Republican challenger Sen. John McCain in November.
President Clinton has been to the area twice already, once in Portsmouth before the Ohio primary and then just a couple of weeks ago when he stopped in Morehead. He has been treated with rock star-like status wherever he’s been while stumping for his wife.
Voter turnout is expected to be high, according to Secretary of State Trey Grayson. He has estimated that turnout among Democrats could reach 30 percent while turnout for Republicans will be about 15 percent. In the last few presidential primaries, the voter turnout was in the mid-teens.
McCain locked up the Republican nomination in March but Republicans will be able to cast votes for their president nominee. Other former contenders, like Texas U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, suspended but didn’t shelve their campaigns and will still be on the ballots.
President Clinton will also visit Mount Sterling and Richmond on Monday before joining up with his wife in Louisville on Monday night.
Hillary Clinton started her day on Saturday in Louisville and then was in Springfield, Covington and Bowling Green. She will be in Maysville, Prestonburg and Lexington on Monday before returning to Louisville.
Chelsea Clinton was in Ashland on Monday morning for the opening of her mother’s headquarters.
The Obama campaign, while trailing in Kentucky polls, have opened 16 regional officers and have started a series of commercials aimed at Kentucky voters in preparation for the fall campaign.
