School bus crash kills one

BLAINE — One person was killed Monday when a school bus collided with another vehicle in Lawrence County.

No children were hurt in the crash, which involved a Lawrence County school bus, district spokeswoman Renaye Sparks said in an e-mail.

The crash happened in the Blaine area at about 4:45 p.m., according to Sparks. The driver of the other vehicle, whose name has not been released by officials, was killed.

There were 21 students, a driver and a monitor on the bus when it crashed, according to Sparks. Most of the children were elementary age and a few were high school students, she said. All the children were checked at the scene and no injuries were reported.

The children were transferred to another bus to complete their ride home.

A crisis team will be at Blaine and at Lawrence County High School today for followup counseling, Sparks said.
