James Baker Hall dies at 74

LEXINGTON — A Lexington native and former poet laureate for Kentucky has died at his home.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported James Baker Hall had been struggling with rheumatoid arthritis, which led to a respiratory infection.

Ed Noon, funeral director at Care Cremation & Funeral Service confirmed Hall died of natural causes on Thursday. He was 74.

The University of Kentucky graduate was director of creative writing at the school for 25 years. He also taught at Stanford, New York universities, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Connecticut.

He served as Kentucky's poet laureate from 2001 through 2003.
