ASHLAND —
A rummage sale Saturday will raise money for a boy and his family struggling with the long-lasting effects of his battle with viral meningitis.
Six-year-old Cai Helms was diagnosed with viral meningitis as an infant. He recovered, but with lifelong symptoms that affected his bones and joints, stunting the growth of his legs. Shanna Helms, his mother, traveled with him to a hospital in Florida, where they stayed for four months last year, while he had surgery on one leg to straighten it and increase growth. Now, the boy must have surgery on his other leg, and coming up with funds for such a trip has proven difficult for the family.
All proceeds from the rummage sale will go to the Cai’s Journey fund, which exists solely to pay for travel and lodging expenses during the family’s stay away from home for the boy’s surgery and following period of recovery and physical therapy.
“Our insurance covers the surgery and therapy, nothing else,” Mrs. Helms said.
The rummage sale will offer clothes for every age, toys, decorations, electronics, furniture, kitchen applicances and much more.
“People have been so generous in donating,” Helms said. “We will be selling Cai’s Journey bracelets, and Cai will be there, so people can come say hi.”
The rummage sale will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at 1105 Shelby Ave., across from Zanzi’s Pizza. Mrs. Helms will also host a spaghetti dinner on Aug. 18 at AK Union Hall to benefit the Cai’s Journey fund.
