Officers scuffle with armed man in Greenup

SOUTH SHORE — A Kentucky State Police trooper and Greenup County sheriff’s deputy scuffled with an armed man at a traffic safety checkpoint Sunday evening.

The incident occurred about 7:40 p.m. as the officers were working a checkpoint on Ky. 784, Schultz Road, Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper said.

According to Cooper, as KSP Trooper Nathan Carter approached the driver of a vehicle that was stopped at the checkpoint, Deputy Cody Fuller saw the passenger, later identified as Lonnie Horsley, 53, of Three Prong Road, pull a pistol out from underneath the car seat.

Fuller moved to take the gun away from Horsley and a struggle ensued, during which Horsley allegedly tried to gain control of Fuller’s duty weapon, Cooper said.

Horsley — listed in jail records as being 5-feet-4-inches tall and 325 pounds — scuffled with both Fuller and Carter, but the two offers were eventually able to secure the scene and restrain the suspect, the sheriff said.

Horsley was charged with public intoxication, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, attempting to disarm a peace officer, third-degree assault on a police officer, tampering with physical evidence and menacing. He was lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center, where he remained Friday under $50,000 bond.

The driver of the vehicle, a 37-year-old man from Garrison, was charged with driving under the influence, no insurance and other traffic-related offenses. He pleaded guilty Friday morning before Greenup District Judge Brian McCloud, Cooper said.

The Independent generally does not publish the names of suspects who are charged only with misdemeanor offenses.
