ASHLAND —
A police report provides a few additional details regarding a fracas between two motorcyclists that reportedly began as a road-rage incident and ended with one of them being stabbed.
Each of the combatants, Patrick Steele, 52, and Dewey Greear, 57, told police the other was the aggressor in the fight, according to the report, filed by Ashland Police Department Officer Erik Wilder.
The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. Sunday in the front yard of Greear’s residence in the 2500 block of Central Parkway. Greear was charged with first-degree assault. Greear also filed a cross-complaint against Steele for fourth-degree assault, which is under review by County Attorney Phillip Hedrick.
According to APD Field Operations Commander Mark McDowell, Steele, a retired city fire department captain, was apparently angered by something Greear did and rode to his house to confront him.
According to Wilder’s report, it was Greear who called 911 to report the incident, telling a dispatcher he “had been attacked” by Steele, so he stabbed him with a pocket knife.
Another 911 call subsequently came in from Steele’s girlfriend, who reported Greear “was making threats” to her and to Steele, so Steele got off his motorcycle to confront him, and was stabbed by Greear after doing so.
Wilder’s report states when he arrived at the scene, Steele was standing in the street holding his stomach, which had blood running down it.
“I was then approached by Dewey Greear, who immediately handed me a pocket knife,” the report states.
Greear also told the officer he “was being kicked all around the yard” by Steele, and was “in fear for his life due to his heart condition,” so he pulled out his knife. He also told Wilder that Steele “lunged forward into the knife.”
Greear and Steele both were hospitalized following the incident. Steele was taken initially to King’s Daughters Medical Center, then transfered to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. Greear was admitted to KDMC for observation after complaining of medical emergency.
Greear was cited to court, rather than being arrested. A preliminary hearing in his case is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 3 before Boyd District Judge Gerald B. Reams Jr. The purpose of the hearing will be to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to bind the case over to a grand jury.
Greear was charged with first-degree assault for allegedly intentionally inflicting injury to Steele with a “dangerous instrument.” The charge is a Class B felony that carries a 10- to 20-year prison sentence.
