IRONTON —
Ohio University Southern will have its annual Martin Luther King Day observance at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 in Bowman Auditorium on the Ironton campus.
The event will include presentations by Boy Scout Troop 106 and the Yvonne DeKay School of Dance, music by Voices of Faith and Kim Coburn, a reading by Mitzi Sinnot and announcement of the annual MLK Essay Contest participants. Refreshments will be served.
OUS will also host several other events focusing on King. An interfaith dialogue series at 1 p.m. Jan. 22 in Mains Rotunda in the Riffe Center will bring together Christian, Islamic and Jewish clergy with the theme “Finding Common Ground.” Participating clergy include the Rev. Kevin Dotts of South Point United Methodist Church; Rabbi Jean Eglinton of B’Nai Sholem Congregation in Huntington; the Rev. David Huffman of St. Joseph Catholic Church; Majed Khader, professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies at Marshall University; and the Rev. Damon Sneed of Mount Olive Baptist Church. The moderator willbe Purba Das, assistant professor of communications studies at OUS.
A brown-bag concert at noon Jan. 23 in Mains Rotunda will feature Michelle Dots and Rick Payne.
A screening of the documentary film “Freedom Riders” is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in Bowman Auditorium. The film focuses on civil-rights activists who rode buses in the Southern states in the early 1960s to challenge segregation laws.
A free public brunch and lecture will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 25 at the OUS Proctorville Center; the speaker will be the Rev. Samuel R. Moore of Full Gospel Assembly in Huntington. It will also feature a slide show and music.

19-year-old launching one-man food drive, ‘Cans for a Cause’
Never accuse Aaron Hannah of not being ambitious and failing to set high goals for himself.
Later this month, Hannah, a 19-year-old 2012 graduate of Raceland-Worthington High School, will launch what is essentially a one-man food drive. His goal: to collect at least 10,000 pounds of canned food for River Cities Harvest to distribute to local nonprofits and churches that help feed the hungry.
Hannah, who just completed his freshman year as a Bonner Scholar at Berea College, said scholars are encouraged, but not required, to do community projects designed to help the needy. -
Westwood man charged with attempted murder
A Westwood man was arrested on attempted murder charges following an incident Sunday night, according to the Ashland Police Department.
