ASHLAND —
Agencies from across the FIVCO ADD will conduct a street count of homeless individuals in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Elliott and Lawrence counties on Jan. 30 as part of the 2013 K-Count coordinated by Kentucky Housing Corporation, the state housing finance agency and the Kentucky Interagency Council on Homelessness.
The K-Count is a survey of homeless persons in every county in the state, excluding Fayette and Jefferson counties. Because of separate funding applications from the federal government, these two counties will conduct their own count.
During the 2011 count, 109 homeless individuals were counted in the FIVCO ADD. Kentucky statistics show homeless persons use a variety of public systems in costly ways, thus creating significant costs to local service programs. An accurate count is needed to ensure agencies that serve the homeless in the FIVCO ADD receive appropriate funding from federal and state sources.
Among the agencies participating in the K-Count include Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky, CAReS, the City of Ashland, P.A.T.H./Pathways, Grayson office of the FIVCO ADD, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Shelter of Hope, Sarah’s Place in Sandy Hook, Community kitchen, The Dressing Room, The Neighborhood and Helping Hands of Greenup County.
Cash donations and food vouchers also are needed so that when homeless individuals and families are found and counted, they can be provided a meal and alternative lodging.
For more information, call Ann Perkins, executive director of Safe Harbor, or Mary Hill, administrative coordinator, at (606) 329-9304.
