The Winter Wonderland of Lights Festival is accepting applications for the sixth annual Winter Wonderland Beauty Pageant, slated for 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at Verity Middle School Auditorium; registration for the annual Christmas Parade, set for 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in Ashland; and designs for the Christmas Card to the Community project.
Applications/registration may be obtained by calling (606) 324-5111 or visiting the Ashland Alliance office. They also are available for download at winterwonderlandoflights.com or facebook.
Applications and entry fees for the beauty pageant must be postmarked no later than Oct. 29. There is a $500 Educational Scholarship for the winner of the queen division. Parade applications must be received no later than Nov. 13. Designs for the Community Christmas Card project must be submitted for approval no later than Oct. 15, with cards delivered to Central Park by Nov. 2.
Agriculture
conference set
LEXINGTON
Kentucky Women in Agriculture will have its 13th annual conference Nov. 7 and 8 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Louisville.
The theme will be “Agriculture — Making Kentucky Proud.” Registration is $85 for the two-day conference ($65 for students), which includes all meals, Taste of Kentucky Proud events and membership dues for 2013. Registration is due by Oct. 24. Conference scholarships are available.
Seminars scheduled for Nov. 7 will cover risk management, agriculture advocacy, health issues and marketing. KWIA’s 2012 award winners will be announced during Wednesday’s luncheon, recognizing the outstanding achievements of KWIA members and supporters.
Thursday includes a district networking breakfast, featuring testimonials from farmers from each membership district. Participants are encouraged to attend the Kentucky Agriculture Summit (kyagsummit.com), which begins that afternoon at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The evening wraps up with the “Kentucky Proud Taste Event”, featuring Kentucky Proud.

Plans under way for arts festival

The Russell High School Band Parents Association will have its Russell Arts and Craft Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Russell High School, 709 Red Devil Lane.

Homemakers’ cookbook on sale
WURTLAND
The Greenup County Homemakers’ cookbooks are for sale for $5.
The 141-page cookbook features recipes and baking tips from homemakers across Greenup County.
Cookbooks are available at the extension office, 35 Wurtland Ave.

After a week of state testing, one local elementary rewarded their fifth graders with a surprise visit from the Pottery Place. Oakview Elementary students were able to design and paint a ceramic tile with the help of instructors.

Crews dig through night after deadly Okla. twister
Spotlights bore down on massive piles of shredded cinder block, insulation and metal as crews worked through the night lifting bricks and parts of collapsed walls where a monstrous tornado barreled through the Oklahoma City suburbs, demolishing an elementary school and reducing homes to piles of splintered wood. At least 51 people were killed, including at least 20 children, and those numbers were expected to climb, officials said Tuesday.

AT&T to hire 140 workers at East Park
