CATLETTSBURG —
Typically sleepy school board races will be more lively than usual Nov. 6, with several seats being contested.
They include boards in Boyd, Greenup, Elliott and Lawrence counties.
In the Boyd County School District, long-time member Theresa Jackson is not seeking another term and two candidates want to take her place.
They are Dan Phillips Jr. and Judy Nichols.
In the same district, incumbent Randy Stapleton is opposed by Roxanne Gross.
In the Fairview district, incumbents Scott McIntyre and Rick Tackett, along with a third candidate, Doug Campbell, are running for two open seats. The seats will go to the top two vote-getters.
Terry Vest, Jane Ehrie and Jim Craft are running for two open seats in the Russell Independent district. Vest and Ehrie are incumbents and the top two vote-getters win.
In the Carter County district, one of three board positions is opposed; incumbent Chris Patrick is challenged by Jeremy Rogers. Two other members, Keila Rogers Bender and David L. Jessie, are unopposed. Bender originally had been a challenger to incumbent Robert Flaugher, but he withdrew from the race and his name will not appear on the ballot.
All three open seats in the Lawrence County district are contested. Incumbent James M. See is opposed by James A. Cassady, incumbent Barbara Lee Robinson is opposed by James (Jim) Shannon, and D. Heath Preston is opposed by Jerry Robinson.
Two of three Elliott County board races are contested. Incumbent Donnie D. Barker is opposed by Nancy V. White while incumbent Brenda Fannin Sheets is opposed by Mary Adkins. Incumbent Susan Burton is running unopposed.
Unopposed races include Ashland Independent, where incumbents Charles Chatfield, Carol Jackson and Frank DeMartino all will return for another term, Greenup County, where Kelly Adkins, Sue Miller and Linda Wellman will keep their seats, and Raceland-Worthington, where incumbents Mike Boyles and Jerry Epling have no opponents.
