COALTON —
The severe thunderstorm that tore through northeast Kentucky Thursday forced the closure of rides at the Boyd County Fair but not the fair itself.
When lightning started flickering around 8:30 p.m., officials shut down the rides for safety, said fair board president Yvonne Green. The rides did not reopen that night.
By the time the rain started the mud bog race was already under way and was able to continue, she said. Some patrons left because of the rain but the fair didn’t suffer any dip in gate receipts because of the weather.
The fair didn’t suffer any wind damage either, and the grounds were mostly unscathed.
One area in the patron parking lot is waterlogged and roped off but the remainder of the lot is useable, she said.
Green expected that Thursday’s soaking would actually improve conditions in the motorsports arena for Friday’s demolition derby because the earth in the arena needs to be damp.
There will be another demolition derby tonight.
Fair workers usually sprinkle water on the arena but the rain did the work for them.
The rain on Tuesday forced postponement of the Cowboy Obstacle Challenge; that event will be held at 11 a.m. today.
