Singer and songwriter Sasha Colette says she is looking forward to Saturday evening’s release party for her latest recording, “Ridin’ Away,” which explores her maturity as a musician and showcases the talents of her band, The Magnolias.
“The whole album has a feel of prairie songs ... it’s kind of a concept album,” Colette said last week, smiling as she confessed her own love for “cowboy” songs and themes.
“I don’t want to call it cowboy songs by any means. Really ... it’s honestly about losing a friend. It has a wide-open space feel to it,” she said. “Right now I just needsome wide-open spaces.”
Recorded with Aaron Fisher at 101 Productions in Charleston, Colette said the new five-song album was essentially recorded live in the studio during a three-day session.
“There’s just something about the way the band intertwined. We read off each other so well and I think it shows. This album has such a true sound for what we do,” she said, quickly adding her personal praise for the instrumental tracks recorded by guitarist Jeremy Short, bassist Chris Justice and drummer Steve Barker.
Short’s guitar work on the song “Red Bandana,” for example, exceeded Colette’s expectations.
“I still get teary eyed when I hear the solo on Red bandana,” she said, explaining the song is based around direct references to the latest chapter in her own life. “I remember hearing it for the first time in the studio and it just kept bringing tears to my eyes because I really love that song.”
Having graduated from being the girl with a guitar to the singer in a band of gifted musicians, Colette said working with The Magnolias allows her to dig in and deliver her vocals in a more powerful way.
“I’m not a guitar player, I’m a vocalist. That’s my big thing and that’s what catches people’s attention,” she said. “When I’m on stage I am brutally honest. I’m angry and frustrated and that’s a good place to get it out I guess.”
Colette penned the lyrics for each of the songs on “Ridin’ Away” and said she feels the album contains some of her strongest phrases and delivery to date. The first cut, “Leroy,” for example is a reflection of modern-day mountain life.
“Leroy is not so much a prairie song or a cowboy song. It is kind of about West Virginia poverty. Lyrically I think it’s the best song I’ve ever written. It’s brutally honest,” she said.
Saturday evening’s CD-release event at The V Club in Huntington, which will feature live performances by Sasha Colette and The Magnolias as well as Tyler Childers and The Switchmen, will also be a gathering of fans from different places.
“This is me introducing the band with all of the fans from different shows all in one room together,” she said.
