RUSSELL — Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Meals on Wheels program is participating in the national 2010 March For Meals campaign.
“We are excited about our March for Meals campaign,” said Mary Ellen Conley, OLBH Senior Services coordinator. “Our goal is to recruit as many people as we can to join us by taking the pledge to end senior hunger in America by 2020.”
March for Meals is a national campaign, initiated and sponsored by Meals on Wheels Association of America, to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community.
A major aspect of the 2010 March for Meals campaign is for Americans to team up with their local Meals on Wheels program and take the pledge to end senior hunger in America by 2020. This national movement comes at a good time, as recent MOWAA research studies have revealed the problem of senior hunger in America is indeed growing worse. Currently, one in nine seniors is at risk of hunger in the United States.
OLBH assists with meals being delivered five days a week to elderly or disabled people with food being prepared by a variety of vendors and delivered by volunteers. OLBH’s local Meals on Wheels routes include the communities of Bellefonte, Burnaugh, Catlettsburg, Flatwoods, Russell, South Ashland and Westwood, which are served by the OLBH program, and Grayson, Greenup, South Shore and Worthington area volunteers coordinate programs to serve those areas with advisory support from OLBH.
