ASHLAND —
Winter’s blast of snow and ice did not stop area residents from generously donating non-perishable goods to Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky during Shop and Share Day.
The annual one-day drive was Saturday with the Russell and Ashland Kroger stores and the Food City store in Louisa serving as partners.
Safe Harbor received more than 2,000 items thanks to the generosity of shoppers at Kroger and Food City, said Ann Perkins, executive director of Safe Harbor.
The total value of the items and cash donations exceeded $8,000, Mrs. Perkins said, adding the day’s success was due in large measure to the many volunteers who worked from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to distribute suggested shopping lists at the three area stores.
“Shop and Share is a huge opportunity for us to involve the whole community, and we’re so grateful for the public’s generosity,” Perkins said. “Shoppers helped provide us with the essentials of life that keep our families going.
“We can’t do this alone, and we depend on the community a lot.”
Girl Scout troops from the Wilderness Road Council helped at the Russell and Ashland Kroger stores. The Boyd County Drug Court assisted at the Ashland Kroger, and the Greenup County Drug Court volunteered at the Russell Kroger.
This marked the fifth year for Shop and Share Day, which is sponsored by Kentucky first lady Jane Beshear along with Kroger stores across the state as well as 13 Food City stores in eastern Kentucky. The annual event provides the state’s 15 domestic violence shelters with much-needed non-perishable supplies.
Organizational partners for the 2012 Shop and Share Day include the first lady’s office, Kentucky Domestic Violence Association (KDVA), Kroger, Food City, Kentucky Commission on Women, Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council.
Safe Harbor was founded almost 30 years ago, and serves victims of domestic violence as well as their children through residential and outreach programs. The domestic violence shelter works with residents in the FIVCO ADD, including Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Elliott and Lawrence counties.
