Amy Compston is one determined young woman. Some would even call her a Superwoman.
The 28-year-old is a full-time nurse, wife and mother of four — and she’s training to run in the Boston Marathon.
And you thought you had time management issues.
We introduced Compston’s passion for running and goal of competing in the Boston Marathon last month with a feature story on the front page. But during the next two months, we hope to get a little closer look into her busy life with a daily diary she has agreed to write for us leading up to her running in one of the most prestigious events in the world.
She will be among a select group from the area who have qualified to run in the Boston Marathon over the years. Some of those have reached out to Amy, giving her tips about what to expect and pitfals to avoid. She’s certainly going to be joining an elite club.
Beginning Monday, she will tell in diary style of how her week of preparation is going on a daily basis — how many miles she logged, what she was thinking while running (sometimes as early as 3 in the morning), how she is juggling work, family and running and some of the obstacles (mental and real) that are put in front of her every day (from dogs to midnight shifts) and other unusual things that may have happened on the training path.
It should be a unique view into this young woman’s life as she prepares for her goal of running in the Boston Marathon along with 30,000 other participants.
The eight-week series will hopefully be inspiring and entertaining as we watch Amy run toward her goal.
Her training has come largely through something she found online and it ramps up greatly in the weeks leading up to the marathon.
It takes discipline and desire to complete training for a marathon even if you do nothing else but that. When you combine it with being a full-time wife, mother and nurse, that makes her journey even more remarkable.
We hope “Watching Amy Run” will be an interesting feature readers will enjoy during the next two months. Following one of our own hopefully will give us more of a personal bird’s-eye view of the Boston Marathon from two months out right to the finish line.
