ASHLAND —
Those attending the 59th annual Boyd County Old-Timers Breakfast are in for a treat next month.
Joe Bonsall, a member of the Oak Ridge Boys and an accomplished author, will speak at the event Oct. 6 at the Elks Lodge on Carter Avenue.
Local attorney John Vincent, who is the chairman of this year’s event, has been working since the end of last year’s program to secure Bonsall, who has been singing with the Oak Ridge Boys since 1973 but also does emotional and patriotic speaking engagements.
“Last year we had a distinguished colonel in Col. David Wilcox, who spoke for us, and everybody really enjoyed it,” Vincent said. “I was continuing on with the patriotic-type program along with the emphasis on veterans.”
Bonsall, 64, comes from a military family. He has written several books, including “GI Joe and Lillie,” a book about his parents’ lives during and after World War II. Joseph Sloan Bonsall Sr. and Lillie Maude Collins are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
“We started working on getting him late October of last year,” Vincent said. “One of the things that take so long is he’s still touring with the Oak Ridge Boys. So we needed to see if he was going to be in the vicinity to meet with us that day. It so happens they are in West Virginia that weekend. They do a show on Friday and a show on Saturday and he’s coming up to be with us Saturday morning.”
Bonsall is an accomplished speaker who has drawn rave reviews from those who have heard him.
“I’m very excited that he was available and that we’re able to bring him in,” Vincent said. “I know he’ll give an interesting, uplifting and informational speech to the group. We’ve allotted him a little more time than we normally do. So things will be a tiny bit different.”
Because of seating limitations, advance tickets will be sold, Vincent said. The $10 cost, which includes breakfast, remains the same as in past years.
The breakfast is for anyone who was born in Boyd County at least 50 years ago or has been a resident for at least 40 years.
Last year, for the first time, it was hosted at the Elks Club. The buffet has typical breakfast items — eggs, bacon, sausage biscuits, gravy and potato casserole.
Bonsall will have books available to purchase.
Besides charting several hits with the Oak Ridge Boys, Bonsall has a solo chart credit alongside the Sawyer Brown band in its 1986 single “Out Goin’ Cattin,’’’ on which he was credited as Cat Joe Bonsall.
