ASHLAND —
The figure paintings of Ironton artist Linda Helgason will be displayed at The Upstairs Gallery starting with today’s First Friday art walk.
She also will read her poetry at 7:30 p.m.
“Some of my poetry goes with with the art,” she said. “The poems tend to be very personal. If they’re not about art, they’re about love.”
She said she’s working on collecting enough poetry to self-publish a book.
About 20 of her works, mostly watercolor and ink, will be at TUG. Most of Helgason’s works are watercolor, although she said occasionally she works in another medium, noting she has a 6-foot-by-5-foot acrylic piece painted on a window blind and a large, colorful calypso dancer painted on insulation board.
Her subject matter is primarity nudes.
“WIth nudes, there are no tiresome leaves or trees to draw,” she said with a laugh. Noting nudes are traditional subject matter in art, she said they make interesting subject matter for artists.
“The model only has to shift and it’s a whole new picture,” she said. “I don’t get bored trying to render nudes accurately or with the spirit that goes with the model.”
