Congressional candidate speaks in Ashland

ASHLAND —  Bill Adkins, who is vying for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District seat, spoke in Ashland at a dinner hosted by the Progressive Liberals of the Tri-State Friday evening.

Adkins, an attorney in Williamstown, said one way he plans to serve the district is by making himself accessible.

“I’m always available. Accessability means so much... My phone is always on, and I always call people back, even the people who don’t want me to,” he said.

Adkins said he intends to represent Boyd County and the eastern part of the district by addressing the issues here, the primary one being employment.

“We have to get people back to work,” he said. “We have to be proactive... We need to bring businesses here. There’s an interstate that goes through here. Let’s take advantage of it.”

He said he’s reaching out to all voters, not just Democrats, but Republicans, members of the tea party and other parties as well.

Adkins said the dinner, hosted by PLOTS, a group that formed on Facebook, was a casual event where area voters could meet him and hear what he had to say.

“We’re politically like-minded. We wanted a place to express out thoughts and goals politically, and that’s what the group is for,” said Chere Hallahan, PLOTS member and the event coordinator.

She said the group formed several months ago and continues to grow. The group had its first meeting in June and will continue to have regular monthly meetings.

“We’ve been working on this (dinner) for a couple months, and I’m pleased with the turnout. I think we’ve got 56 people here just by Facebook invites, she said.

The purpose of the dinner was to introduce Adkins to voters in the area and to give them a chance to get to know him.

“We’re going to get to know Bill tonight,” Hallahan said.

During his speech, Adkins pointed out the three main priorities he will address if he is elected, which are to strengthen Medicare, the economy and the middle class.

“The economy is, no pun intended, job no. 1,” he said. “We have to invest in our nation... We have to put people to work, and that’s what will make our economy run.”
