New Boyd school plans show traditional design

CANNONSBURG — Preliminary plans for a new high school in the Boyd County district show a traditional design in brick and stone and an interior designed around academic clusters.

The plans, supplied by the Sherman Carter Barnhart architectural firm that is designing the school, were approved by the school board earlier this week and submitted to the Kentucky Department of Education, which also has to sign off.

“It’s a traditional classical design ... very symmetrical,” said architect Charles Barnhart.

A center entrance with tall, arched doorways is flanked by classroom wings.

From the entrance, the library is straight ahead, with a gymnasium on the right and an auditorium and cafeteria to the left.

The exterior view from the other side shows a facade embellished with tall, arched windows.

The windows provide views overlooking the athletic fields and natural light conducive to learning, said project manager Kevin Cheek. The building is oriented to make the best use of natural light, he said.

The master plan for the building site shows where the district hopes to place a football field, baseball diamonds, aquatic center, field house, cross-country trail and golf area when it has the money.

The master plan also indicates sites for a future elementary, early learning center, vocational education building and board office.
