A fatal traffic accident in Greenup County on Sunday was one of five that occurred in Kentucky during the Labor Day weekend.
The crash occurred about 6:35 p.m on Culpa Creek Road, Kentucky State Police at Ashland said.
According to the report, Harold Worthington, 40, was traveling eastbound when he lost control of his 1996 Chevrolet. The vehicle left the road, went into a field and overturned.
Worthington was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene by Greenup County Coroner Neil Wright. A passenger in the vehicle, Angela M. Roush, 30, was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital, where the KSP said she was listed in stable condition.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Justin Oliver, the KSP said.
The other Labor Day weekend traffic fatalites occurred in Jefferson, Perry, Pulaski, and Wayne counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Jefferson County crash.
The Perry County mishap involved a motorcycle and the victim wasn’t wearing a helmet, the KSP said.
Through Sept. 6, preliminary statistics indicate 501 have been killed on Kentucky roadways during 2010. That’s 47 fewer than during the same time period last year.
Sixty-two of those crashes involved commercial motor vehicles. There were 395 motor vehicle fatalities and 205 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Forty-one pedestrians have been killed. Fifty-three fatalities involved motorcycles, one involved a scooter, two involved bicycles, and nine involved ATVs. A total of 106 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
These Labor Day weekend statistics are still as the KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
