Scrapbook retreat Nov. 19 through 21

FLATWOODS — Christmas trees, poetry, flowers and dress forms are just a few of the items those attending an upcoming scrapbooking retreat can expect to see.

The retreat, set for Nov. 19 through 21 at Carter Caves State Resort Park, is offered by The Scrapbook General Store in Flatwoods, the oldest scrapbook store in Kentucky and the only one in eastern Kentucky, according to owner Winnie Thacker.

“All they do is scrapbook the entire time,” Thacker said of those into the pastime who attend a retreat. “Retreats let them work for hours without being interrupted. They’ll sit in a group and work, oblivious to what’s going on.”

She said the retreat offered by her store is a little different because it offers workshops and other projects besides scrapbooking are tackled.

Last year, the event attracted about 32 participants; so far this year, she said she has about 50 signed up. Cost is $40.

Thacker said the store is asking those on the retreat to make a donation to Safe Harbor, a safe home for abused families. She said scrapbooking is offered as an activity to its residents.

“I am asking that you go to Kroger’s and purchase 2-gallon, zip-lock plastic bags and bring your scrapbook items that you no longer use,” Thacker said. “Friday night we will gather up everyone’s ‘stuff’ and create a bag of goodies for each of these families. We will have a Christmas card for you to sign to insert into each bag.”

She said those who can’t make the Friday night session can bring items for donation on Saturday.
