The Greenup County Health Department has been named one of 10 agencies in Kentucky to receive funding from the new Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening Project.
As fiscal agent of the grant, they will be working with the Little Sandy District Health Department, Ashland-Boyd County Health Department, Lawrence County Health Department, the Kentucky Cancer Program, Three Rivers Medical Center, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and Bellefonte Physician Services to help uninsured people receive a free colon cancer screening.
In 2008, the Kentucky General Assembly passed HB 415 which provided for the development of a colon cancer screening program within the Department for Public Health to address the colon cancer screening needs of the uninsured and underinsured people in Kentucky. The Kentucky Cancer Screening Program was created as a result of this unfunded legislation. In 2012, Gov. Steve Beshear designated funding in the state budget, approved by the Kentucky General Assembly, for colorectal cancer screening with matching funds from the new Kentucky Cancer Foundation.
“We are really excited that we can provide this service to the people in the FIVCO area,” said Chris Crum, public health director for Greenup County. “At this time, agency patient navigators are receiving training to administer this new program. After the first of the year, we should be ready to enroll patients.”
The FIVCO Colon Cancer Screening Project received $250,000 for two years to provide colon cancer screening services for people, age 50-64, who are uninsured or who only have hospitalization insurance but no prevention services.
Patient navigators will enroll a patient in the program and will determine if the person qualifies for a ‘Fit Test’ stool sample or a colonoscopy. The patient navigator will be able to connect the patient to a medical home for evaluation and follow up if the patient does not have a family doctor.
“I was pleased to support House Bill 415 in 2008 and the colon cancer screening program. As we continue to improve access to cancer prevention services for the people of northeast Kentucky, we are effectively fighting cancer in northeast Kentucky,” said state Rep. Tanya Pullin.
